Depicting Wressle Castle (in East Yorkshire, England). Tonal graphite pencil drawing (black/grey tones), of naive style depicting a small castle in grounds with grass, trees and a fence. Aged off-white background surface, probably cartridge paper or paper.
Artist: Signed W. H. Higgins (or Riggins??), Wressle, July / 30.
Frame Details:
Wooden frame, light to mid brown with darkened patina in the woodgrain. Glass to front. Board back on frame with tabbed and taped edges and metal eyes with string for hanging (these rear fittings are newer than the frame itself).
Size:
External dimensions, including frame, approx 16 7/8 x 10 9/10 x 1/2 inch, 42.8cm x 27.8cm x 1.3cm. Horizontal.
Condition Notes:
The picture surface has lots of small pale beige foxing spots, mostly in the sky. Pale beige band on the upper left edge of the picture. A few small bumps and a very small crease line in the surface of the paper. The drawing itself is very good with a charming simple style. The glass is good, with a few very fine scuff lines, but as is typical of very old glass there are some dots, air bubbles and ripples inside the glass from manufacture. Frame edges are very good and sound, with a few small scuffs and nicks, and the aforementioned patina in the grain. Back of frame excellent.
